The Apple TV+ series Swagger has just added Vinessa Shaw to its cast. Per Variety Shaw comes into the show in the role of “Diane,” the Chairwoman of the Cedar Cove Prep School Board. She is also the mother of one of th school’s basketball players and is said to be “very invested in her son’s performance on the court.” In a previous statement, series creator Reggie Rock Bythewood teased the new characters that would be arriving in season 2.
“I’m excited to share more of the beautifully complicated lives of these incredible characters,” Bythewood, who also serves as showrunner, director, and executive producer, said when Swagger was renewed in June. “In season 2, they will search and discover what it means to be a champion on and off the court, and the basketball playing will continue to be groundbreaking. We are grateful to Apple TV+ for the platform.”
Inspired by NBA star Kevin Durant’s experiences with youth basketball, the series follows the lives of players, coaches, and families involved with youth basketball clubs. Swagger also stars O’Shea Jackson Jr., Isaiah Hill, Shinelle Azoroh, Quvenzhane Wallis, Caleel Harris, Tristan Mack Wilds, Tessa Ferrer, James Bingham, Solomon Irama, Ozie Nzeribe, and Jason Rivera. All will return for season 2. Along with Bythewood, other executive producers include Durant, Brian Grazer, Rich Kleiman, Francie Calfo, Tony Hernandez, Kristen Zolner, and Joy Kecken.
Shaw, a former child star who appeared in early 90s classics like Hocus Pocus and Ladybugshas more recently been seen in movies like The Blazing World, 12 Mighty Orphansand We Need to Do Something. She has also appeared in a variety of TV shows, which includes a notable role in the Showtime series Ray Donovan.
Don’t Count on Seeing Vinessa Shaw in Hocus Pocus 2
This month, one of Shaw’s most popular movies will be getting a sequel, but we shouldn’t expect to see her in the film. Hocus Pocus 2 hits Disney+ at the end of the month and it brings back Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy as the Sanderson Sisters. Shaw had previously revealed that she was never approached about reprising her role to appear in the movie, noting that she would have been happy to be involved if she was invited.
“I would love to know more about it. I haven’t heard anything,” Shaw told ComicBook.com. “That movie just, it blew my mind to be able to do that movie as a young child growing up on Disney movies. It just was an amazing second film to have done. It brought me to basically love filmmaking because, up to that point, I hadn’t really done anything that big. I mean, Ladybugs was pretty big for me to begin with, but three months on the set working on this movie, it just rocked my world. So to be able to, again, have everyone love it … So I hope the second one is just as cool.”
Hocus Pocus 2 will hit Disney+ on Sept. 30. The second season of Swagger on Apple TV+ doesn’t have a premiere date at this time.
