On Thursday, Anna Sorokin’s attorneys requested a federal judge to grant her release from immigration custody. Anna Sorokin is the Russian-German con artist who deceived New York City’s elite circles by posing as the eccentric “heiress” Anna Delvey.
A representative said that Sorokin is neither dangerous nor at risk of fleeing, and that she not only “deserves the chance to construct her life,” but also should be permitted to do so in the United States.
Due to allegations that she overstayed her visa when she originally came in New York years ago, the con artist has been in detention for 17 months. Attorney Juseyin Tosun argued in the motion filed in the Southern District of New York that if the judge won’t release her, customs officials could give her a bond hearing “to vindicate her constitutional right to be free from indefinite, unreasonably prolonged, or arbitrary civil immigration detention.”

After her former attorney, who referred to her as a “ungrateful b**ch” who thought that “being white is enough” for a legal defence, delayed proceedings for months by neglecting to send over her paperwork, immigration authorities refused Sorokin a bail hearing in July. She has so missed more than ten months of hearings, which are due to civil immigration detainees every six months. Sorokin would be free to go if she chose to do so rather than try to remain in the US.
The fake heiress conned over $200,000 from banks, hotels, restaurants, other companies, and friends while attempting to talk her way into a $22 million loan to open a “art club” in Manhattan. She was sentenced to four to 12 years in prison for grand larceny and theft of services in 2019.

She was detained by ICE on the visa accusation less than two months after being freed early in 2021 on the condition that she behaved herself.
At the Orange County Correctional Facility in Goshen, New York, she is still detained.
Sorokin, the subject of a Netflix series and an upcoming HBO documentary, rose to fame after a New York magazine article revealed how the Russian-born immigrant created a completely false identity as the heir to a $67 million German oil fortune and conned the city’s society circles and upscale hotels into supporting her fantasy despite having little money of her own.
Following her release, she did not dissapoint her hordes of social media admirers by recording every occasion with a personal cameraman. Her brazen approach and courtroom flair garnered her thousands of followers.
