The 60-year-old former Indian wicket-keeper batsman Pandit, who has been appointed the head coach of Kolkata Knight Riders for the 16th season of the IPL, is ready to transform himself if the need arises. “You don’t need to use the same method everywhere. One has to be a little flexible while trying to understand the mindset of each player, which is very important,” Pandit said in an interview to news agency PTI.
He further said that I always do this (studying the players) and accordingly we can understand things and move forward. Pandit said that he does not use a common approach for everyone in coaching. He has no hesitation in admitting that some of the top players like Russell and Cummins have a lot of experience and will never use their Ranji Trophy methods at the IPL level.
Pandit further said, these are experienced players. They have been playing at the highest level for so many years and certainly the same method cannot be used at every level. You have to understand and study their methods and make sure that the demand of cricket takes precedence over anything else.
The state associations that approach Pandit at the domestic level have always known that if you want his services you have to give him complete freedom to work but will it be possible at the IPL level.
Pandit said, “I don’t know what my image is but I understand that the job of a head coach needs to take things in such a way that they are result-oriented. “I don’t know how people see my ways but I will try to fulfill the opportunity given to me to the best of my ability,” he said.
Former Mumbai legend Abhishek Nair is one of the key members of the KKR think-tank and captain Shreyas Iyer is also from Mumbai. Incidentally, Pandit has coached both of them at different times in their careers.
“It is always an advantage that you have players in your structure with whom you have spent time and certainly the synergy that we have maintained over the years,” Pandit said.
He said, KKR have Umesh Yadav who has played under my coaching in Vidarbha and Venkatesh Iyer who is an important member of Madhya Pradesh. I know all these boys personally..
